I did at first, but... now I'm not so sure. If it is a test or trial, it's no more for me specifically than it is for the rest of those who have been brought here.

I don't understand why an angel would be thrown in with the rest of us.

[He pauses to cough, turning his face away from the tablet to muffle the noise.]

Ah, but you don't wanna talk about this, do you.

No, it's fine. I'm not the only celestial being here, though. There's the constellation, for one. I wouldn't be surprised if there were more.

And Enoch, as well. You've met Enoch?

[godsspeed]

Yes. He is... not what I was expecting. [ Not Metatron. Not that Castiel had ever really known Metatron well enough to have any reasonable expectations of what he'd be like. ] He's a good man, though. Kind.

[devoutish]

What were you expecting?

[godsspeed]

One of my brothers. He once secreted away to Earth and adopted the guise of a human man named Enoch. When I heard someone by that name was here I thought he might be doing it again.

[devoutish]

He was written about in the holy books, yeah? THe name sounds familiar to me, but I couldn't recall the stories.

[godsspeed]

Yes. There were a few humans who were there to bear witness when we found him on Earth and called him back to Heaven. They mistook it for a man transforming into an angel, rather than an angel shedding his disguise, and wrote about it under that assumption.

Or at least, that's how it happened in the world I used to preside over. I think things went very differently for the Enoch I met here.

[devoutish]

Even angels have got their different multiverses. Mm. Can't quite wrap my head around that one.

[godsspeed]

God made many separate universes, all with different rules, and angels - at least ones of my Heavenly Sphere and rank - were generally not meant to leave the ones we were tailor-made to serve. It's still a little odd to think that in one of them, the Scribe of God started life as a mortal man, though.

[ Not to mention all the other differences Enoch has mentioned. But that's not something he really wants to get into at the moment. ]

It's all-- I dunno, I feel like this chance to talk to you is wasted on me. Others would get more from it than I do.

[godsspeed]

If it's any consolation I don't usually have any answers to the kinds of questions my siblings and I are normally asked. It's not as much of a waste as you might think.

[devoutish]

"What is God's purpose for me", that sort of thing?

[godsspeed]

That's a very common one, yes. Most of the time I'm either not allowed to answer or I just don't know enough to say beyond the vaguest of terms. It's made for a few frustrating conversations. For everyone involved.

[devoutish]

I'll tell you what, mate. You tell me what not to ask, and I won't.

[godsspeed]

You can ask whatever you like. I just can't promise anything.

For what it's worth, I enjoy talking to people. I didn't get to very often, before I arrived here.

[devoutish]

So do I. Well-- not so much lately, I suppose.

[What with the trauma and debilitating depression and all.]

I understand. It can be difficult. Especially in times like these. If you want me to leave you to your rest, I can, but thank you for reaching out to me. I'm glad Royce has someone looking after him.

[devoutish]

[He hmmms, but doesn't hang up.]

Who did you talk to, before here?

[godsspeed]

Other angels, mostly. The rest of the Earth garrison and my commanding officers. We spent a lot of time watching humans, but weren't allowed to interact with them at all without explicit orders to do so.

I miss them. I've never been separated from my brothers and sisters for this long before.

[devoutish]

Would it be too impertinent to say I know how you feel?

[godsspeed]

No, it wouldn't. Pack bonding is a key part of the human psyche. I think you form closer bonds with each other than angels do, but it's impossible for me to tell.

[devoutish]

Do you love your siblings?

[godsspeed]

[ There's a slight but noticeable pause before he responds. He has to think about this one. ]

Yes. Even the ones who are... difficult, at times. And even the ones I've never had the chance to speak to personally.
